Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938
Originated in President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal
The first minimum wage was set, which was 25 cents an hour
The work week was limited to 44 hours a week
Also banned child labor
Children under 14 were not legally allowed to work
Children under 18 were restricted from hazardous jobs (ie. mining, and some factory jobs)
Standards were developed to keep records of hours worked and wages paid
The same standards let employeers keep track of overtime owed to employees who exceeded the standard work week
Over twenty amendments have been made to the Fair Labor Standards Act (most of which have been made to increase minimum wage)
